What kind of services does Building Greater Communities offer in the community?
The BGC staff is primarily made up of Independent Support Coordinators, often referred to as ISCs. The job of the ISC is to work with the developmentally disabled individuals and their families to help them learn what programs and supports are available to them. The ISC works independently of any direct providers who provide the actual services to the family and also work at no cost to the individual or family on whose behalf they are working.
The ISCs also act as facilitators in setting up any additional support that may be needed for the individuals to "connect" with their local communities. This includes, but is not limited to, helping with job placement and/or job training if an individual expresses a desire to work.
The ISCs meet with the individual and their families on a regular basis to determine their needs and address any questions or concerns that they may have. They are also on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to deal with any emergencies that may arise.
